Specialist leadership, governance and culture sessions focused on speaking up, silence and organisational risk in the charity sector
Charity Leadership Scotland members receive exclusive discounted access to Change The Chat’s specialist support on speaking up, whistleblowing risk, culture and accountability.
These offers are not publicly available and are designed specifically for charities and third sector organisations navigating complexity, risk and power.

Why this matters
Charities face particular pressures when it comes to speaking up:
-
blurred power structures
-
reputational fear
-
under-resourced HR functions
-
cultures that can unintentionally silence staff
-
rates of formal complaints and whistleblowing rising in third sector
-
the Employment Rights Bill, passed in December 2025, will have significant impacts on employment rights and the culture of silence within organisations

Change The Chat helps organisations to reduce risk and build environments where people can speak up early, before issues escalate into crisis. We work with leaders, boards and staff to understand how silence is created - often unintentionally - and what enables people to speak up earlier and more safely.
Session 1: When good intentions go wrong
How leadership decisions unintentionally silence staff
This session explores how well intentioned leadership behaviours, informal cultures and values-led narratives can unintentionally create fear or silence. It examines the gap between leadership intent and staff experience and highlights the early warning signs leaders often miss. And if your employees or trustees refer to the organisation or teams as a family, this session is definitely for you.

Who this is for: Chief Executives, founders and senior leadership teams
Format: Two hour facilitated session (online or in person)
Charity Leadership Scotland member rate: £300 (usually £400)
Session 2: The cost of silence
What boards and trustees need to understand about risk in the era of speaking up
Boards often assume that if something is wrong, they will know about it. In practice, silence is both common and costly. This session looks at how small concerns escalate, where boards are exposed without realising it and what effective governance oversight of speaking up really requires.

Who this is for: Trustees, board members and governance committees
Format: 90-minute facilitated session (ideal for board meetings)
Charity Leadership Scotland member rate: £300 (usually £400)

Session 3: Speaking up without burning out
Protecting yourself when power is unevenly placed
Speaking up is often framed as courageous, but it comes at a price. This session names the emotional and professional risks involved and offers practical guidance for navigating them. It focuses on self-protection, boundaries and recognising unsafe dynamics early. This is ideal for establishing greater trust and empathy between the board and CEO relationship.

Who this is for: CEOs, trustees and senior managers
Format: 90 -minute facilitated session (trauma-aware delivery, to be held in person wherever possible)
CLS member rate: £300 (usually £400)
Session 4: After the complaint
Why post-disclosure handling matters more than the issue itself
How organisations respond after a complaint is raised often causes more harm than the original issue. This session explores common post-disclosure mistakes, how fear spreads internally, why the urge to cover-up wrongdoing can be detrimental to your organisation and what reduces escalation, distrust and long-term damage.

Who this is for: HR professionals and senior leadership teams
Format: 2 hour facilitated session
CLS member rate: £350 (normally £450)
